Detailed measurements of the mass balance - the
balance between snow accumulation and ice ablation - are carried out on
selected glaciers. The results provide information on the mass change
(expressed as a an area-averaged value of water eqivalent) of a glacier in
the observed period.
Cumulative mass change for currently investigated
glaciers. These results are obtained from yearly point based mass balance
measurements on the glaciers and periodical volume changes from maps or
photogrammetry of the glacier surface. The long-term trends are very well
recognizable. The strong mass loss in the 1940 and since the 90s in
particular is remarkable. In addition, the increase in the '60s and '70s of
the 20th century is notable.
