The measurement of length fluctuation are carried
out annually on the glacier tongues of all larger and on many of the smaller
glaciers and provide an excellent overview of the variations of the Swiss
Glaciers. The length fluctuations result from the dynamical response of the
glaciers to climatic forcing.
In the figure above the number of measured glaciers
as well as the proportions in percentages of advancing (blue), stationary
(green) and retreating (red) glaciers is shown for everey year since the
beginning of the systematic observations in 1880. The figure below
reprecents the cumulated length change for four selected glaciers of
diffrent size. The different curves reflect the effect of the glacier
geometry on the delayed response at the glacier tongue on the climatic
forcing.
Detailed facts and figures (data, charts) of each
glacier you find on the individual pages (selectable by interactive
maps or
lists).
